Curtain Climbers

So, what do you do if you discover you have a mountain climber for a cat? You know the type — loves to scale the vertical landscape of curtains and draperies. The thicker (and typically the more expensive) the fabric, the better the chance she’ll dig in and start her Mount Everest training regimen. A spray bottle may be the surest deterrent to this determined climber.

Kittens are notorious drape and curtain climbers. If you don’t stop the behavior early, you’ll soon have a full-grown, full-weight cat shredding the curtains and destroying your curtain rods on a regular basis.

If the threat of a spray bottle isn’t effective in keeping your cat off the curtains, you can also booby-trap the curtains so that they’re no longer so appealing:

■ Use tension rods for your curtains, so that your cat’s weight will pull them down as she pulls. A few spills will persuade her to stop.

■ Use the thinnest thread that will hold the drapery to attach it to the rods. Again, the weight of the cat will break the threads and make the fabric fall. To reinforce the unpleasantness (and reduce the number of times you’ll have to re-string the drapes), attach a small aluminum can with a few marbles or pennies inside in an inconspicuous place. It will make a racket as the drapes fall, and your kitty won’t like that one bit!
